State Inflation Data: Families’ Costs Rose $700 More Under Biden Than Over the Same Period Under Trump

New analysis from the Joint Economic Committee Republicans estimates how much more spending an average family in each state needed to purchase the same items during the first year of the Biden Administration compared to the first year under President Trump. Using the same methodology that the Joint Economic Committee – Minority now cites in their analysis of inflation under President Trump, this analysis applies identical calculations over equivalent time periods to measure the relative change in household costs during these administrations.

During the first year of the Biden Administration, families experienced historically high price increases—a cumulative $2,329 increase in spending for the same basket of items nationally. During the first year of the Trump Administration, families saw a much smaller cumulative increases in costs—$1,625 nationally. The data is clear: inflation is far lower under President Trump.

The Committee also calculated state level data, finding that the average inflation cost per household during this period was over $1,000 lower in 20 states and Washington, D.C., with households in some states lower by over $1,400.
