The analysis uses recent data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis on household spending and the most recent Consumer Price Index (CPI) data that tracks inflation through March 2026. CPI estimates the costs that households pay for all purchases and expenses, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, health care, utilities, and other essentials. This analysis uses the same methods that the Joint Economic Committee – Republicans used under the last administration to estimate state-level costs.
