Consumer Price Index Surged to 3.81 Percent in April, Highest Rate in Nearly Three Years
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Joint Economic Committee released its Monthly Inflation Update for April. The headline Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) jumped to 3.81 percent year over year in April, up from 3.26 in March. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, was 2.75 percent year over year, compared to 2.60 percent in March.
Year over year, energy price inflation was 17.87 percent, 21.61 percentage point change from April 2025. In that same time frame, food price inflation was 3.18 percent, 0.42 percentage points higher than April 2025.
Regionally, inflation ended higher across the nation from March to April. CPI inflation was the highest in the Northeast (4.4 percent), followed by the Midwest (4.1 percent), the South (3.6 percent) and then the West with the lowest inflation of 3.5 percent.
From March to April, real average weekly earnings for all employees decreased by 0.19 percent, a decrease of 0.35 percentage points from April 2025, and hourly earnings ended down 0.53 percent, a 0.44 percentage point decrease from last year.
