WASHINGTON – Today, U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan (D-NH), Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee, released an alert warning consumers about sports-related scams ahead of Super Bowl LX. Through illegal sports betting, ticket, and merchandise scams, criminals have used fan excitement about the Super Bowl and other major sporting events to steal Americans’ money and personal information. The alert details major types of sports-related scams consumers may face, as well as key steps that people can take to avoid them.
“Like most Americans, I could not be more excited for Super Bowl Sunday, especially with the Patriots once again back where they belong. Unfortunately, fans need to be aware that criminal fraudsters may try to steal their money and personal information through a variety of illegal sports betting, ticketing, and merchandise scams,” said Senator Hassan. “As the big game approaches, I hope all Americans, even those rooting for the Seahawks, take steps to protect themselves from Super Bowl scams.”
The alert is part of Senator Hassan’s ongoing comprehensive effort to combat scams, which accounted for nearly half a trillion dollars in losses last year and now surpass the drug trade as an illicit industry. Senator Hassan has opened investigations into the roles that Starlink, Match Group, major AI companies, and federal agencies have in preventing scams. She also alerted consumers to scam spikes around the Black Friday shopping and holiday travel periods.
