ICYMI: Joint Economic Committee – Minority Report Shows Impact of Declining Canadian Tourism in States Across the Country

WASHINGTON – In case you missed it, the Joint Economic Committee – Minority last week released a report detailing how the decline in Canadian tourism is harming American businesses and communities in every state along the U.S.-Canada border. The decline in tourism comes as President Trump has proposed annexing Canada, imposed several rounds of tariffs paid by Americans on Canadian goods, and repeatedly broken off trade talks.

See coverage highlights of the new report from outlets across the country below:

Fortune: U.S. businesses are getting throttled by the drop in tourism from Canada: ‘I can count the number of Canadian visitors on one hand’

From Washington state to northern New England, American businesses that have long depended on Canadian visitors are seeing traffic dry up — and with it, a crucial source of revenue.

A new report shared exclusively with Fortune by the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) – Minority, a congressional standing committee dating back to 1946 responsible for documenting the economic conditions of the U.S., details how a sharp drop in Canadian tourism is hitting every U.S. state along the northern border. The findings come as President Trump has proposed annexing Canada, imposed several rounds of tariffs on Canadian goods, and repeatedly broken off trade talks with Ottawa, contributing to a chill in cross-border travel and spending.

Concord Monitor (New Hampshire): Congressional report shows New Hampshire took a financial hit from Trump’s attacks on Canada

New Hampshire saw 30% fewer visitors from Canada last summer as the Trump administration’s tariffs, border controls and hints about taking over our northern neighbor chilled the two nations’ relationship.

Every state bordering Canada saw sharp drops in visits from the north, but by some measures, New Hampshire was hit the hardest.

That’s the conclusion of an analysis by Democratic members of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress, of which Sen. Maggie Hassan, D-N.H., is the ranking member.

WMTW (Maine): New report shows tariffs are hurting every state that borders Canada

It’s been almost a year since President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Canada, and on Wednesday morning in Augusta, state lawmakers heard from industry leaders about how they have been impacted.

“We heard from state experts and from members of industry in Maine, and we heard some really disturbing things,” Sen. Mike Tipping, D-Penobscot, said.

A report from the federal Joint Economic Committee found that exports to Canada were down by 18% and border crossings from Canada into Maine were down 25%.

WCAX (Vermont): Report shows Canadian tourism decline hurting businesses

A new report shows that the decline of Canadian tourists in the U.S. is hurting businesses in our region.

The Democratic wing of Congress’s Joint Economic Committee report says the declines are a direct result of President Trump’s rhetoric on annexing Canada, tariffs paid by Americans on Canadian goods, and repeatedly broken off trade talks.

The report includes anecdotes from business owners like Christa Bowdish, owner of the Old Stagecoach Inn in Waterbury, Vermont. “This is long-lasting damage to a relationship, and emotional damage takes time to heal. While people aren’t visiting Vermont, they’ll be finding new places to visit, making new memories, building new family traditions, and we will not recapture all of that,” Bowdish said.
