September Unemployment Remained Unchanged in 20 States, Decreased in 10, Increased in 21
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Joint Economic Committee released its monthly State Employment Update, outlining the employment situation in all 50 states and DC. Today’s release provides the latest state-level employment data, following a delay in the original release schedule due to the lapse in appropriations. Nationally, in September, the unemployment rate rose by 0.1 percentage point to 4.4 percent. Among the 50 states and the District of Columbia, unemployment fell in 10, rose in 21, and remained unchanged in 20. The highest unemployment rate was 6.2 percent in DC, and the lowest was 2 percent in South Dakota. Overall, 35 states ended September with lower unemployment rates than the national average of 4.4 percent, while three tied that rate, and 12 states and DC ended the month higher.
Also, in September, payroll jobs rose in 30 states and fell in 20. The largest payroll job percent increase was 0.6 percent in Missouri. The largest payroll job percent decline was 0.3 percent in Alaska, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
