March State Unemployment Remained Unchanged in 27 States, Decreased in 14, and Increased in 10
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Joint Economic Committee released its monthly State Employment Update, outlining the employment situation in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In March, among the 50 states and the District of Columbia unemployment remained unchanged in 27, decreased in 14, and increased in 10. The highest unemployment rate was 6.3 percent in District of Columbia, and the lowest was 2.3 percent in South Dakota.
Nationally, the unemployment rate fell by 0.1 percentage point to 4.3 percent. Compared to the national unemployment rate of 4.3 percent, in March, 3 States matched the national average, while 27 States were lower, and 21 states and the District of Columbia were higher. In comparison to the national labor force participation rate of 61.9 percent in March, 19 states were lower, and 32 states and the District of Columbia were higher.
Also, in March, payroll jobs rose in 35 states and fell in 15. The largest payroll job percent increase was 0.4 percent in Tennessee. The largest payroll job percent decline was 0.2 percent in Hawaii, Montana, and Oregon.
