Lee Report Outlines Policies to Strengthen Marriage

WASHINGTON—Today, Ranking Member Mike Lee (R-UT) released a Joint Economic Committee report finding that marriage and relationship education programs are showing promising outcomes for improving family relationships.

The report provides policy options and case studies for implementing marriage education initiatives, showing how institutions closest to couples can help couples strengthen their relationships.

Lee said, “Our latest research at the JEC illustrates the many ways that communities, civic institutions, and local leaders can use marriage education initiatives to help Americans strengthen their families. Marriage education can be a valuable tool to help increase the likelihood that more Americans build healthy marriages and a stable family life.”

The State of Utah leads on marriage education with its healthy marriage initiative, funded through a small portion of the state’s Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) funds. Utah also requires divorce orientation education for most divorcing couples and provides relationship literacy education for high school students.
