Ranking Member Mike Lee on July Jobs Report

WASHINGTON—Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT), Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee, made the following statement on this morning’s jobs report issued by the U.S. Department of Labor:

“With 943,000 payroll jobs added in July, the economy has now recovered three-quarters of the net jobs lost during the pandemic. This marks a strong opening for the third quarter and follows the welcome news that GDP has finally fully recovered, surpassing its pre-pandemic levels.

Though the headwinds of the COVID-19 Delta variant threaten to slow our progress, I am confident that America’s families, communities, and businesses are fully capable of mitigating the risk without onerous mandates and closures. Policymakers should be wary of adopting new restrictions that could hobble businesses or get in the way of Americans’ return to school and community life and instead prioritize eliminating policies that discourage work.”

The Joint Economic Committee is Congress’s bicameral economic research center and home of the Social Capital Project, led by Ranking Member Mike Lee.
