Heinrich Statement on September Jobs Report

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee, issued the following statement today after the Department of Labor announced 134,000 jobs were added in September:

“The economy has been adding jobs since the economic expansion that began in 2010, but it’s clear we still need to address the real economic challenges working Americans face in their day-to-day lives. But instead, my Republican colleagues and the Trump administration have decided their priorities lie in heaping windfall gains on the wealthiest Americans and special interests under the guise of supposed tax cuts for the middle class.

“We can take bipartisan action now to help us better understand where policies should be targeted. At a recent hearing of the Joint Economic Committee, Democratic and Republican witnesses agreed that we need more detailed data in order to understand how the economy is working, or not working, for Americans at all income levels. That is why I introduced the Measuring Real Income Growth Act, so policymakers have the data we need to create new policies that generate growth for all Americans—not just those at the top. I will continue to work to ensure that every American, regardless of zip code, has the tools they need to succeed in our economy.”

President Trump promised American families that they would see a $4,000 annual raise after the tax plan; so far, average weekly wages have increased $19.55 without accounting for inflation.
