NEW: Ahead of July 4th Cookouts: Amid Trump’s Tariffs, Cost of Popular Domestic Beers Up 13% and Beef & Ice Cream Prices at Highest Since the 1980s
WASHINGTON – The Joint Economic Committee – Minority released a new report today finding that amid President Trump’s tariffs and rising economic uncertainty because of them, Americans across the country are paying higher prices for July 4th cookout beer, food, and gear.
The Committee found that compared to before Trump’s so-called “Liberation Day” on April 2nd:
- Six-packs of two of the most popular domestic beers – Miller Lite and Coors Light – are up more than 13% at Walmart
- The cost of the most popular Amazon listings for key categories of cookout gear – for instance an outdoor chair, grill, and grill tools – are up by $55, or 7.7%
- The cost of the most popular propane grill for a backyard cookout has risen by $30
- Ground beef and ice cream prices have hit their highest-ever price since Consumer Price Index (CPI) data on them first became available in the 1980s
“One of the best parts of summer is getting together with family and friends for cookouts, especially on the 4th of July – but cookout prices keep rising in the months following President Trump’s tariffs announcements,” said Joint Economic Committee Ranking Member Maggie Hassan. “We need to work together to lower costs for families. Yet instead, President Trump has injected chaos and confusion into the economy and in turn, Americans are paying higher prices for some of the most popular cookout essentials.”
