The Joint Economic Committee – Minority Calculated Overall Change in Grocery Costs Based on a Family’s Typical Grocery List
WASHINGTON – The Joint Economic Committee – Minority today released a new report finding that a typical American family paid $310 more for groceries during President Trump’s first year in office compared to 2024. These price increases contradict Trump’s statement this week that “grocery prices are starting to go rapidly down,” and his pledge on the campaign trail that “a vote for Trump means your groceries will be cheaper.”
“Despite President Trump’s promises that he would lower grocery costs, families across America are paying higher prices at the cash register,” said U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan, Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee. “This report provides proof of what the American people are experiencing every day: Costs are too high, and Trump’s policies are only making them worse.”
For the report, the Committee compared the prices of grocery items for a typical family’s average weekly grocery trip between January – December of 2024 and January – December of 2025, finding an overall increase of $310 in grocery costs for the average family. The Committee’s calculations come from the latest data released this week by the Bureau of Labor Statistics as well as information from sources such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Bureau of Economic Analysis’ Personal Consumption Expenditures.
The Committee’s report details cost increases in 2025 for major items and finds that compared to 2024 families spent:
- $76 more on ground coffee
- $71 more on ground beef
- $51 more on eggs
