NEW DATA: Americans Forced to Spend $100 Billion More on Gas in Total During Trump’s Iran War; Families on Average Have Each Had to Spend an Additional $4,700+ on Everyday Essentials Under President Trump

Updated State and Congressional District Fact Sheets on Rising Costs Under Trump

WASHINGTON – American families have had to spend an additional $4,700+ on goods and services since President Trump took office last year, per updated data released today by the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee - Minority. The new data include national, state-by-state, and congressional district-level costs for everyday essentials, including new Committee estimates that Americans in total have spent an additional $101 billion on gas since the start of the Iran War. These updated fact sheets come amid recent independent findings that prices for many household goods would have fallen last year if not for President Trump's tariffs.

“Families know what the data show: Everyday life is just too expensive,” said U.S. Senator Maggie Hassan, Ranking Member of the Committee. “While President Trump and Congressional Republicans promised to lower prices, their actions instead sent prices soaring. Trump’s reckless tariffs and Iran War continue to make things harder every day for Granite Staters and Americans across the country.”

Read the new fact sheets for each state here and each congressional district here. Key nationwide cost increases under Trump by type of expense included in the new Committee report are:

Housing Costs

  • American families have had to spend an additional $915 on housing costs such as rent and mortgage payments since President Trump took office.

Energy Costs

  • Gas prices have soared since the start of Trump’s Iran War. In total, people across the United States have spent an additional $101 billion on gas since the beginning of the war. That has cost the average family in the United States an additional $856 in gas costs.

  • Families in the United States spent an additional $110 on electricity in 2025 under President Trump than they did in 2024. And, in the first seven months of 2026, they spent an additional $130 on electricity than they did in the same months in 2024.

Grocery Costs

  • Americans paid an additional $310 for groceries in President Trump’s first year than in 2024, and grocery prices are now more than 4 percent higher than when Trump took office.
  • Beef and coffee prices are hitting Americans especially hard. Since the President took office, the average price of ground beef has risen almost every month to a record high of more than $7 per pound. Coffee prices also spiked and are now more than $9 per pound.

Health Care Costs

  • Because of Trump and Republicans’ refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax cuts that help people afford their health insurance, monthly premiums for ACA plans rose over 50 percent on average in 2026 compared to last year. Meanwhile deductibles surged to record highs, increasing by more than $1,000 on average.

This report is part of Senator Hassan’s ongoing effort as Ranking Member of the Joint Economic Committee to quantify the economic impact that President Trump’s actions have on American families. She will continue to shed light on how Trump has personally profited off the presidency while Americans have faced rising costs under his watch. Senator Hassan will also continue to push the Trump administration to reverse course on his tariffs, illegal war with Iran, and other harmful actions that have driven up costs in all 50 states.
